BALTIMORE, MD, October 2, 2006 - Under Armour, the leader in performance apparel, introduced this year's limited edition "Power in Pink" performance apparel line as part of its annual campaign to raise money for breast cancer research and education. While supplies last, consumers can purchase exclusive, ribbon-imprinted styles from Under Armour at over 500 retail locations nationwide and online at www.uawoman.com to commemorate their commitment to the fight against breast cancer.
The "Power in Pink" line includes a variety of technical tops, bottoms and accessories retailing from $10 to $65, all bearing the breast cancer awareness ribbon. Under Armour has created custom pink versions of several women's items, all of which feature the company's signature moisture-wicking fabrication and superior Moisture Transport System to keep athletes cool, light and dry during the course of a game, practice or workout. Under Armour will donate a percentage of the proceeds from every "Power in Pink" item purchased in-store and online through the dedicated link from the women's section of the Under Armour website. In addition, 100 percent of the proceeds from its employee sale will be donated to a variety of breast-cancer focused charities throughout the country.
This year, 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States. That is a diagnosis every 2 ½ minutes (Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation website). Research from the American Cancer Society has shown that vigorous athletic activity such as jogging and participating in team or individual sports significantly reduces the risk of developing breast cancer and, if diagnosed, can make a significant impact on the recovery process. The "Power in Pink" promotion was conceived by Under Armour in 2003 in an effort to help educate the Company's core female athlete consumers about this important link between physical activity and breast cancer.
"As a company and as members of the community, we're proud to play a role in the fight against breast cancer," said Steve Battista, Under Armour's Vice President of Brand. "With our 'Power in Pink' line, active women everywhere can support this worthy cause while taking advantage of Under Armour's superior technology on the field, on the road and in the gym."
In the three years since its inception, Under Armour's donation amount has more than doubled each year through the continued growth in popularity of the "Power in Pink" line. Consumers can find "Power in Pink" products online at www.uawoman.com, which has recently been restructured to make the shopping experience even easier, and at retailers across the country such as Nordstrom, Dick's Sporting Goods and Modell's. Visitors to www.uawoman.com can click on the dedicated link to the "Power in Pink" section to read the stories of three women who are winning their personal battles with breast cancer and find links to key educational resources, in addition to purchasing items that support the cause.
As part of the Company's commitment to increase breast cancer awareness in its local community, Under Armour is a sponsor of Baltimore's BreastFest, an annual event to raise money for breast cancer research and medical services at Mercy Hospital. The three women profiled on Under Armour's "Power in Pink" website received treatment at Mercy Hospital's Hoffberger Breast Center, which is recognized as a premier breast care center.
