Come January 1, athletes everywhere lace up their sneakers and hit the gym to commence the start of a new training season. However, what often goes unseen is the pinch point they hit. Goals require unwavering dedication – a “Real Tough” mentality – where relentless hard work meets digging deep, in order to shed doubt and fear, and uncover the grit that lies within.
Under Armour is empowering and motivating athletes everywhere to harness that “Real Tough” mindset and level up to their goals this year by teaming up with three UA athletes who know a thing or two about pushing past their limits. Brooklyn guard Seth Curry, gold medalist and volleyball player Jordan Thompson and Netherlands Track & Field para-athlete Fleur Jong, are showing athletes everywhere how they find their “Real Tough” mindset in a series of inspiring content that provides a rare look at the inner mantras that drive them, the physicality of their training and the unwavering dedication they maintain to perform at their best.
SETH CURRY
Sport: Basketball
Position/Team: Guard, Brooklyn
Seth’s Real Tough Mantra: I’ve faced a lot of adversities throughout my career. Through it all, I've tried my best to embrace those journeys. Enjoying the challenge of a struggle is what makes you better – it’s the reason you can come back and prosper, instead of getting set back.
Seth’s Advice: Every day when I wake up, I try to stick to the same routine. That’s something I’ve found to play a key role in my own mental toughness and success – having the opportunity to stick to a routine and seeing it through, even when it may not be something I want to do in the moment.
“Enjoying the challenge of a struggle is what makes you better – it’s the reason you can come back and prosper, instead of getting set back.”
Seth Curry
JORDAN THOMPSON
Sport: Volleyball
Position/Team: Opposite Hitter for Milano & USA
Jordan’s Real Tough Mantra: Mindset plays such an important role in any athlete’s journey. When I start doubting myself, I remind myself what I am capable of, put a stop to the negative thoughts and just embrace that I have more to learn to get better.
Jordan’s Advice: I want young girls to understand that they are capable of amazing things and have the power of strength and resilience on their side. The lessons they learn as an athlete will go beyond their sport and have the power to impact many different areas of life.
“I want young girls to understand that they are capable of amazing things and have the power of strength and resilience on their side.”

FLEUR JONG
Sport: Para Track & Field
Events/Team: 100M, 200M, Long Jump for the Netherlands
Fleur’s Real Tough Mantra: When I feel like I’m about to give up, I look at my progress. I tell myself that progress, no matter how small, is an improvement and is getting me one step closer to my ultimate goal. This is what keeps me going, even when I feel like that goal is out of reach.
Fleur’s Advice: When you’re looking for motivation, just take a deep breath and close your eyes. If your body can still move, you can stay motivated. It doesn't matter how slowly you move, but if you keep moving, that’s all that matters. Just finish what you start every day.
“I tell myself that progress, no matter how small, is an improvement and is getting me one step closer to my ultimate goal.”
