Equality Has No Offseason

UA, Chloe Logarzo and UNIFIED team up to celebrate Pride and create better representation in sport

The principle of equality is simple: to ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities. At Under Armour, ‘Stand for Equality’ has always been a core value, meaning we stand with underrepresented groups, such as the LGBTQIA+ community, year-round and remain committed to creating better representation in sport, around the world, and in our own community.

IN SPORT

As an extension of that support, Under Armour is teaming up with Chloe Logarzo, one of Australia’s top professional female soccer players and a leading LGBTQIA+ voice for Football Australia, to increase the visibility of diverse role models in sport. Chloe, who joined the UA family in 2018, has always felt that “you can’t be what you can’t see” and that she was missing a role model figure in her early athletic career.

"Representation in sport matters,” said Chloe Logarzo, professional soccer player. “Growing up, I didn’t have anyone to look up to because I didn’t know anyone who was like me. You can’t be what you can’t see, so it’s important that I be myself and stand up for what I believe in so that the younger generation knows you can be accepted and loved for who you are and still be a successful elite athlete.”

That’s why Chloe and Under Armour are working together to change the landscape in sport, by providing more visibility to LGBTQIA+ athletes and their platforms to help equal the playing field. Chloe and UA will be teaming up for several initiatives throughout the year to celebrate what she stands for and spotlight who she is as an athlete.

AROUND THE WORLD

This February, Under Armour joined Chloe to take their “Stand for Equality” efforts on and off the pitch at Sydney WorldPride, a global LGBTQIA+ festival that takes place every two years to promote and advocate for the LGBTQIA+ issues through festivities across arts, theatre, sport, music and more. Under Armour supported the global event by teaming up with the International Gay & Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) for the Official Sydney WorldPride Soccer Tournament. As part of the partnership, Under Armour provided grants to the organizing committee to fund items such as event operations, on ground branding, prizes, personnel costs and hardship funds to reduce the barriers to participation. As the face of the partnership with UA, Chloe appeared at the Grand Final match, hosted by Under Armour, to present the winning team with their prizes.

"Sport can be a great unifier,” said Chloe. “And when Under Armour said they wanted to team up with me to support Sydney WorldPride events this year, I was really excited. Sydney World Pride and The Official Sydney WorldPride Soccer Tournament will bring people together from around the world, no matter their ethnicity or sexual orientation, to play a sport I love in celebration of something so important. And that is really powerful.”

UA followed Chloe at the Mardi Gras Parade, where she returned to lead Football Australia, like she did in 2022, as they marched to celebrate self-expression and the fight for equality, giving meaning to building greater representation in sport.

IN OUR COMMUNITY

UA knows it has an important role and opportunity to help change the landscape in sport by giving a voice to changemakers like Chloe, working to create a more inclusive work environment and supporting organizations that are deeply connected to their LGBTQIA+ communities.

UA’s LGBTQIA+ team resource group (TRG), UNIFIED, has been an integral part in helping Under Armour create opportunities and advance visibility for the local LGBTQIA+ community, such as the UA PRIDE Grant program in 2020 for those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and critical donations to local LGBTQIA+ nonprofits like The Pride Center of Maryland. Helping to champion access to sport for all athletes, UA has also established partnerships with national organizations including Rainbow Labs and Unmatched Athlete, each with the goal of providing safe places for LGBTQIA+ athletes and allies to play and compete.

“It is important that brands truly celebrate Pride – not just by making a rainbow avatar – but by empowering and supporting their LGBTQIA+ employees through their policies and actions,” said Joanna Hale, Lead, Supply Planning and UNIFIED Communications Lead. “When LGBTQIA+ members of the community feel safe, accepted and able to ‘be themselves,’ that is when they perform their best – whether that is on the field or at the office.”

“UNIFIED has played a vital role in making Under Armour a more inclusive place to work by continuously looking for creative ways to engage teammates to become allies – through educational sessions held by Teammates who identify as part of the community, by participating in Pride events, but most importantly by not staying silent when it comes to our community both on and off campus,” said RJ Mansfield, Designer, Bags & Accessories and UNIFIED Commerce Lead.

Following Sydney WorldPride in February, Under Armour will continue its commitment to making a stand against inequality by celebrating US Pride in June highlighting Chloe and UNIFIED through interactive brand activations, and its ‘United We Win’ product collection, designed in collaboration with the UNIFIED TRG. CELEBRATING THROUGH THE "UNITED WE WIN" COLLECTION

Beginning in May, Under Armour launched its ‘United We Win’ product collection, designed in collaboration with the UNIFIED TRG, to celebrate all athletes, no matter who you are, who you love or what your pronouns are.

“The TRG is always involved in the design process, which is part of the warm feeling of inclusion,” said Candace Davidow, Manager, Materials Lab Engineer, Apparel. “It’s a strong collection that is easy to understand and support. Together as a community we win, it’s just that simple and true.”

The gear in the collection is built to help you run faster and train harder, but also give back to the community. The proceeds help fund grants and programs that support the LGBTQIA+ community, so that every athlete has the opportunity to compete. The collection features men’s, women’s and unisex apparel footwear and accessories with the UA Rainbow Road pattern and ‘United We Win’ mantra.

“The Rainbow Road of the United We Win Collection shows the path that community activists fought to get us here today but also shows that our struggle isn’t over as we fight on,” said Patrick Lille, Workplace Experience Coordinator. “I want our collection to show that hidden LGBTQIA+ kid watching sports that they are seen, and they are not alone,” said Mansfield. “I want them to feel empowered that one day they can not only become the greatest LGBTQIA+ athlete the world has ever seen, but become the greatest athlete the world has ever seen.”
