Domination Reaches New Heights with the Curry 6 from Under Armour

Chapters have been written about the evolution of basketball over the 127 years since Dr. James Naismith introduced the game to students in Springfield, Mass.

Every once in a while, someone introduces a new element and the game enters a new era. But until now, no one had been (dis)credited with ruining the game quite like three-time World Champion and two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry. Stephen hasn’t just bent the game of basketball; he’s broken it. An athlete with a game-changing style of play like Stephen's requires a cutting-edge shoe to take into action on a daily basis.

Introducing the Curry 6 from Under Armour, the most innovative basketball shoe to hit the market, to match the most innovative player in the League.

"The Curry 6 gives me the ultimate confidence that no matter what move I try, change of direction, change of speed, the amount of wear and tear I put on my body over the course of 48 minutes, that it is going to ride with me the whole way."

Stephen Curry

Understanding basketball seems simple – a 94 by 50 foot court and two baskets. There's the constant effort to put the ball in the net. Post play, the shot clock, the use of strength and height to get to the rim. The invention of the 3-point line, and players over the years learning the value of an efficient shot.

Then Stephen came along and the game stopped evolving; it mutated overnight. The court became bigger, the spaces wider. Anything is possible when Stephen is on the floor and, to match the unpredictability he brings night in and night out, his footwear needs to be unlike anything before it.

Everyone sees the 30 foot splashes from deep, the pinpoint dimes and the jaw dropping handles. What they may miss is that Stephen never stops moving. In fact, since entering the League, he's ranked in the 95th percentile in average distance covered per game – essentially running a marathon every month.

"Stephen Curry runs about 2.3 miles per game, and that's why we wanted to design a shoe that was more like a running shoe for him. We added full-length HOVR to provide impact absorption and energy return."

Leon Gu, Designer of the Curry 6

Basketball is also a sport focused on quick twitch movements, with the flow of the game constantly changing direction. Match analysis data highlights that Stephen will have a change in movement pattern over 1000 times per game; that equates to a change every 2 seconds on average.

This high volume of movement change makes it essential that the Curry 6 provides best in class traction. The Under Armour biomechanics team dug into all of Stephen’s movements to help inform the design, helping build a split outsole design that increases court contact for superior traction.

The Curry 6 Fox Theater colorway releases worldwide on UA.com, at UA Brand Houses and at select retail partners for $130 USD on January 4, 2019. Limited quantities of the colorway will drop early beginning December 28 at the SC30 X Oakland pop-up shop in downtown Oakland on 9th Street at Broadway (472 9th Street).
