Under Armour Founder, Kevin Plank, Supports New University of Maryland Athletic Facility to Honor Terps Trailblazers Billy Jones and Darryl Hill
Under Armour collegiate partner, the University of Maryland’s (UMD) 2021 football season kicked off with a bang over Labor Day Weekend, with the opening of a brand-new athletic facility. The Jones-Hill House opening was made possible by support from Under Armour’s Founder, Executive Chairman and former Terp football player, Kevin Plank on behalf of Under Armour.
The new home of Maryland Football is named in honor of Billy Jones, class of 1969, the first Black basketball player at UMD and in the ACC and Darryl Hill, class of 1965, who broke the same color barrier in football in 1963.
"Today we celebrate the opening of Jones-Hill House, a home for Maryland Football, but this is just the first stage in the realization of our vision for Cole Field House,” said University of Maryland President Dr. Darryll J. Pines. “Before we are done, this facility will be part of an interconnected and interdisciplinary complex that will include an entrepreneurship center for all Maryland students and a research institute that will study brain and behavior. Together, these elements will create a living laboratory, where the disciplines of sports medicine, kinesiology, health and human performance and others all come together to discover new knowledge and improve human lives.”
Commenting on the opening, Kevin Plank said: “At Under Armour, two of our core values are ‘Love Athletes’ and ‘Stand for Equality' and being able to support this facility allows us to demonstrate our commitment to both. I do believe this small gesture of a name will make a difference. It’ll start a conversation. To quote President Obama, ‘I do hope the young people who walk through these doors will take the time to learn about all the men and women who made it possible for them to do what they do.’”
The Jones-Hill House provides upgrades to support a top student-athlete experience, including upgraded locker rooms, a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning room and a brand-new sports medicine facility to ensure that athletes receive top-notch recovery support, among others.
